Seoul Eats | Hotel Brunch with a View

seoul // hotel life

Apparently brunch buffets are one of the number one amenities that people look for when booking a hotel, so says hotel guru Anthony Melchiorri. I didn’t really believe this at first, simply because as a toast and coffee sort of person, breakfast buffets have never been a huge selling point for me when choosing a place to stay. However, the more trips I plan, the more I have noticed reviews of a hotel’s breakfast offerings. It seems like an odd amenity to prioritize over things like location, value, and cleanliness, but I suppose every person has his or her preferences.

For those who care about things like free breakfast buffets, then this is totally your hotel.

Seoul Eats | Oyster Dinner at Café de Chef

seoul // vday dinner at cafe de chef

We didn’t have much time after arriving in Seoul to go out or even really search for a place to eat. Sly had to jump on a work call later in the evening and there was no way we would have been able to go all the way to Shake Shack (our original Valentine’s Day plan), grab a burger, and then be back in time for the call. So we did the unthinkable: we ate hotel food.

Snapshots | A Mini Video of Seoul

Up until we left for Seoul over Valentine’s Day, I had been doing so well about keeping up with blogging. I even blogged while on the road! I was finally going to tackle one of the many backlogged travel posts that I have been meaning to get to for ages! And then, I don’t know what happened. I lost steam, lost interest, lost I don’t know what. The more days that passed, the less I felt like blogging. Maybe it was the weather (although I enjoy the winter months), maybe it was that everyone around me seemed to be in a total funk, or maybe I just needed a break.

Notes | February in 10 Photos

seoul tower

February was filled with many sunny winter days spent walking, eating, and exploring, with jackets left unzipped and hats and gloves tucked away in bags, just in case. I’ve never been one to mind cold weather. It gives me an excuse to hole up indoors, drink my homemade tea lattes, and binge read with the kitties by my side.

BOOKS

Books of the Month | February

Though it seems as if I read a decent amount this February, I started a couple of these books last month, giving me a head start on a shorter month. 12 books (including two graphic novels and one audio book), isn’t too shabby though I suspect my numbers will continue to drop as the year progresses. Once again, I checked out waaaaayyy too many books from the library and then felt like I was in a time crunch to finish them. There were a few surprises this month. The book I was really looking forward to reading – Heartless – I ended up feeling pretty lukewarm about, and the book I dreaded reading – The Sympathizer – I actually thought was pretty great. There were also two books, Clancys of Queens and You’ll Grow Out of It, that made me laugh out loud, which is rare for me** when it comes to reading so-called “humorous” books.

Here’s a look at the books I read in February, as well as what I’m reading now and what’s on my TBR list.

Travel Notes | Seoul

Sometimes it takes me a while (literally, years) to blog about the places we’ve been, and I hate that because so many memories, the insignificant yet special memories I love so much, seem to get lost over time. This year I am going to make an attempt at keeping an on-the-go travel diary with less-than-perfect, unedited, photos and accompanied by stream of consciousness notes. In a perfect world I would accompany these posts with a page from my sad and empty sketchbook, but let’s not get too ambitious and give up before I even begin.

HOLIDAYS RECIPES

Recipe | Oatmeal Raisin Maple Syrup Pecan Cookies

valentine's day | 2017

I know I’ve mentioned many times that I’m more of the taste tester over chef in this house. I cook the simple daily meals while Sly makes things like homemade bread and elaborate weekend dishes. But cookies? I can handle cookies.

In our day-to-day lives, we rarely eat sweets so my cookie baking skills are usually kept to the holidays, birthdays, and special occasions. Last night, I whipped up our favorite cookie recipe and we seriously ate 18 cookies between the both of us without even flinching.

I’d say our Valentine’s Day is off to a good start.

The Day Before Valentine’s Day

big basin redwoods state park cabin

The day before Valentine’s Day, we got engaged. It rained all night and our cabin was leaking from every corner, but we had a blazing hot fire, a bottle of Talisker, grilled tuna and cheese sandwiches, and for the next day or so, a huge secret between just the two of us.

I didn’t sleep at all that night.

Eventually, after we made our way back to civilization (and phone reception), we called up everyone we knew and then celebrated with a big brunch followed by a big dinner. We were married less than 9 months later.

I’m not a big Valentine’s Day person, never have been, never will be, but I can get behind the day before Valentine’s Day. Every year, on February 13, we like to have tuna melts and a glass of whiskey for old times’ sake. Leaking cabin optional.

2016 | A Year in Photos

oahu

I know a lot of people consider 2016 to be the worst year ever, so I guess we were a few of the lucky ones. Which is not to say that life didn’t present us a roller coaster of ups and downs. On the other side of friends passing away, a crazy election and major life decisions, there was snowboarding, family time, and exploring lots of new places. I keep waiting to have that ONE golden year where everything works out in my favor and everything goes as planned, but I’ve come to realize that will never be the case. Good and bad coexist on opposite ends of a scale and when the good outweighs the bad, I consider that a victory. For all its struggles and challenges, we still had our health, our kitties, and each other. We saw more of the world and crossed off so many things off our life list. Looking back at all that has happened over the course of the year gives new perspective. The scales thankfully tipped in our favor. 2016 was a win.

Here’s a look back at the year in photos:
