We ushered in the new year with family: a quiet dinner at a local eatery (chicken friend steak with bacon for me), a bit of New Year’s Rockin’ Eve (in which I knew maybe two of the live performers, one of those being Justin Bieber), a not-so-stealthily stashed flask of Laphroaig, lots of ridiculous “fat face” photos, and a fireworks show at the national harbor in Old Town Alexandria.
Back at my sister’s house we sat by the fire and drank bottles of sparkling cider while some of us dozed off (hubs) and others finished off several bags of various flavored popcorn (me).
For some reason, I always get a lump in my throat when Auld Lang Syne starts playing. It makes everything seem so finite. A mixture of both sadness at what once was and excitement for what will be.
Another year gone.
Another year beginning.
