Well, they aren’t really birthday twins in the sense that they weren’t born on the same day. Birth-month Twins, then?
We kept saying “Birthday Twins’ anyway, and was the main reason why we were all in Japan for a good amount of time. I met up with my sister earlier in the month to celebrate her bday and to embark on a sisters trip around the Kansai region of Japan. Sly, whose birthday was at the end of March, wasn’t able to fly out until later, at the very tail end of my sister’s trip. At least there was a little bit of overlap.
To celebrate the March birthday boy/girl, we splurged on a fancy Matsusaka beef dinner at Matsuzakagyu Yakiniku M in Osaka.
considered as the art of meat…gets its tasty reputation and virgin status from the special treatment the cattle is given… For several years all cattle is managed with the highest degree of quality and care…all cows are fed beer to create a healthy appetite, and given a body massage with a mixture of shochu. This particular treatment creates a smooth blood circulation throughout the body of our cows.”
In short, probably the best slices of beef we have ever eaten.
After the main course, our hostess surprised us with a slice of Mille Crêpe cake for the “Birthday Twins.” The cake, like the rest of the meal, was delicious.
When we returned home to Korea, I made Sly his traditional birthday meal: hot dog casserole. Every year I offer to make him whatever he wants for his birthday dinner, and every year, except maybe one, he requests the same thing.
Bacon, hot dogs, pasta, cheese, sour cream, cream of mushroom topped on a layer of broccoli and peas.
Now you can see why we only eat it once a year.
For dessert, Sly requested a pineapple upside down cake. I found this recipe (cooked in a cast iron skillet!). The photos turned out a bit dark, as if I burnt the cake, but it actually turned out perfectly.
Happy Birthday to my sister, Sly, and to all my friends with March birthdays!

April 5, 2016 at 1:33 pmDo you think we look alike? I don’t think we do at all, and in JP people were so confused when we said we were sisters.
In the US though, we are have been asked more than once if we were twins! (I have also been asked if my fully Asian, shorter than me, looks nothing alike, ex-roomie was my twin so I don’t know what people are seeing. Long dark hair = twins.)
I looooove crepes so a crepe cake = heaven. Always wanted to make one too but never wanted to make 20 crepes or however many are needed.

April 6, 2016 at 12:35 amThat’s interesting! I think people are basically clueless (I have two friends named Sarah who work together and sometimes when they introduce themselves people ask if they are sisters! Because sisters usually have THE SAME FIRST NAME? Duh. I also used to get asked in high school if I was Asian. HUH?! ), but it’s interesting that different cultures have different interpretations.
I don’t think you like alike – definitely not twins, but enough to be sisters! 🙂
I love crepes, too. The best part of visiting Paris, IMO! Crepe caaaaaaaaaaaake! Want some now!

April 6, 2016 at 9:16 amI think if you didn’t know we were sisters and we were in the same room you wouldn’t necessarily put it together. My sister said that in the US many people think *all* Asians look alike so therefore any Asian in close proximity must be somehow related!
I used to get the twin comment with my roomie after it was discovered we lived together. Sooo…we were twins bc we are both at least partially Asian and are roommates. Sometimes we would just go with it. We are very much alike…just not physically. I’m assuming when people say “twin” they mean identical…
Two people with same first name = duh, twins. Lol. So awesome. People can be so stupid sometimes.
The best part about Paris, or France in general, is definitely the food. Japanese peeps are huge Francophiles so finding legit baked goods isn’t too hard. Korea is the same though to a somewhat lesser extent. The bakeries here are sooooo good. Dangerous.
